Drop-in Workshop with Artist Theda Sandiford
September 22, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm
Learn free-form weaving, coiling, knotting techniques during this hands-on drop-in workshop with artist Theda Sandiford. Theda has meticulously collected fibers from upcycled textiles donated by the community to create a bold wig inspired by Queen Charlotte of Bridgerton. The fibers are transformed by their collective memory, becoming a “social fabric” that weaves together contemporary issues and personal narratives, particularly the artist’s own experiences with people touching or making comments about her hair. During the workshop, Sandiford will create a safe space for participants to share and consider stereotypes in their own lives as well as the lives of others.
No experience necessary.
The Children’s Museum recently purchased a piece from Sandiford’s Emotional Baggage Carts series. “Wobegone,” on display in the Studio exhibit, has become part of the Museum’s permanent collection. This series and other found object installations “gingerly invite the audience into off-the-wall conversations about microaggressions, stereotypes and implicit bias.”
