about the project

This project developed a toolkit of research tools that projects can use to work with youth to understand the relationships between exhibit design, emotion, belonging and engagement. These tools are built on research that shows that experiences of marginalization often manifest in emotional reactions even before we can verbally articulate them; the tools use emotion to ground the ways we talk about what it feels like to be in a museum. The project, led by the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and EdTogether, involved working with Black and Brown youth and youth with disabilities to co-create research tools that are kid-friendly, including videos, social media-inspired activities, and youth interviewing youth (rather than talking to an adult researcher).
