Field Trips


Planning your next field trip is easy! You must have a group of 15 or more children to qualify for a field trip rate.  We require one adult chaperone per 5 children, required chaperones receive free admission. Admission for each additional adult is: $8.00 Sept 1-March 15 and $11.00 per adult March 16 - August 31. *  See our list of themes and prices below.

Unguided Field Trips

Peak Season (March 16 - August 31):  Available Mondays Only 

Price: $8.00 per student

Off Season (September 1 - March 15):  Available Daily

Price:  $6.00 per student

You and your students can discover, investigate and explore the Children's Museum for up to four hours. When you arrive our friendly Visitor Services Associates will welcome your group. You can also find them stationed in exhibit areas to answer questions and provide assistance throughout your visit.

Guided Field Trips


Peak Season (March 16 - August 31): Required Tuesday - Sunday

Price:  $9.00 per student

Off Season (September 1 - March 15): Available Daily

Price: $7.00 per student

Enjoy a customized fun-filled trip throughout the Museum for up to four hours. When you arrive your guide will welcome your group and provide a schedule for your visit. Your guide will also provide support to your group throughout the exhibits. 

Museum Workshops

Experience one hour of hands-on focused learning led by a Museum Educator and two hours exploring the Children’s Museum. Choose one of the options listed or visit the bottom of the page for more details about designing your own customized experience. (Please note: Workshops are for groups of 25 or less. If your group has more than 25 students multiple workshops can be scheduled.)

Explore the basics of electronics and circuitry with motors and batteries.  Transform the purpose and possibilities of everyday items with circuitry. 

Color

Preschool - Kindergarten
Discover the relationship between color and emotions.  Learn the basics of color theory by mixing and creating the three primary colors - red, blue and yellow.

Clay

$14.00 per student
Preschool - Adults
Create hand built artwork with clay.  Explore the material, sculpt individual works and complete with various painting or finishing techniques.  Teaching artists complete the firing process at the Museum and pieces are ready for pick-up at the Museum within a month of your program.

Five Senses

$10.00 per student
Preschool - 1st Grade
Heighten your sense of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch with a variety of activities like mystery sound boxes, aromatic paints, taste testing and more!

Printmaking

$12.00 per student
Kindergarten - Adults
Experiment with an array of printmaking techniques or simply choose one to explore in depth.  Learn about positive and negative space through silkscreen printing or relief printing using unexpected materials and techniques.

Bugs and Garden Helpers

Answer the questions you always wondered about bugs.  Explore where bugs eat, live and work in our Urban Garden exhibit. 

Plants, Parts and Needs

Investigate how simple machines impact the world around us and explore our collection of fun and functional simple machines throughout the Museum, particularly in the Waterplay exhibit. 

Puppets

Learn about the art of puppetry and explore the Museum's puppet collection.  Use the collection as inspiration while creating a unique puppet.

Broadcasting with The Saturday Light Brigade

$14.00 per student
Grades 1-8 
Work in the professional broadcasting studio used by the family radio program The Saturday Light Brigade, located within the Museum! A broadcasting professional leads a workshop on how a radio program is created. Activities include hands-on time in the studio and a digital recording exercise with a CD memento for the group. Note: Maximum class size is 24 students.

Design a Workshop

Prices vary
Work with our Educational Programs staff to design a workshop or field trip to complement your classroom curriculum or group interests. We will create an engaging, one-of-a-kind program with a theme or focus that will support collaborative learning while creating supportive conditions for personal expression.

Boxed Lunches

$4.50 each plus 7% tax

The following options are available: 

  • Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
  • Cheese Sandwich
  • Hot Dog
  • Turkey & Cheese Sandwich

Boxed Lunches include one sandwich, applesauce and a ½ pint milk. Minimum total of 15 with a minimum per choice of 5. Whole fruit can be substituted for applesauce upon request. 

Delicious Adult Boxed Lunches are also available.

To order Boxed Lunches, submit a Group Reservation Request Form or call our Reservationist at (412) 322-5058, ext. 240. Boxed Lunch orders must be placed at least one week in advance of your visit.
