Donor Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is an effective tool for philanthropy that enables you to place various assets into a dedicated investment account meant for charitable giving.

As a donor advisor, you can suggest grants to eligible charities from your DAF. You receive a charitable tax deduction when you transfer your assets into the DAF.

Different DAF providers have their own fee structures, minimum requirements, and regulations. Regardless of whether you choose a commercial provider or a community foundation, you can continually contribute to your fund and recommend grants as you see fit, offering you flexibility in your charitable strategy.

gifts of stock or appreciated assets

Many donors find that giving appreciated stocks or mutual funds is a great way to manage capital gains tax and enjoy a generous charitable deduction on their taxes. Plus, these assets can also be used to fund a charitable trust or life income agreement.

If you’re considering making a gift of stock to the Children’s Museum, please let us know your plans and provide details about the type and number of shares you’ll be transferring. This helps us ensure you receive proper credit and a receipt for your tax records.

Employer Charitable Giving Programs

Many employers offer charitable giving programs that allow contributions to be directly deducted from your paycheck. The Children’s Museum works with most employers to make your giving automatic and effortless. If your company participates in a United Way workplace campaign, or if you are a federal civilian, military or postal employee, we encourage you to give through your organization’s charitable giving programs.

When making a United Way donation, use the Children’s Museum’s code number 623.

gift through your IRA

Qualified charitable distributions from your individual retirement account (IRA) are current gifts with an immediate impact. Often referred to as “IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts,” these gifts are distributions paid directly from an IRA to a nonprofit.

You can make a direct charitable distribution of up to $105,000 from your traditional, rollover or Roth IRA without including such distributions in your gross income, if you meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least 70.5 years of age at the time of the transfer
  • The funds must pass directly from your IRA custodian to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh

Your gift may satisfy your IRA’s required minimum distribution for the year. Since the amount of the direct charitable distribution can be excluded from your gross income, there is no federal income tax deduction available for such gifts.

The most common way to make this gift is to submit a request to your IRA custodian. Please contact us for more information or assistance in making a gift from your IRA.
