Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2024

Join us to celebrate and commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all that he stood for. Throughout the day, we’ll engage in programs that help us remember his legacy and inspire children and families to continue his work.

Activities include:
  • Story times with author Dominique Briggs in the Children’s Museum
    11:00 am, Noon and 1:00 pm
  • Poetry workshops in MuseumLab
    1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 pm

  • Collaborative art mural Reaching for the Dream – a conversation started by Gwen’s Girls in MuseumLab
    Noon – 5:00 pm
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr videos shown in MuseumLab
    Noon – 5:00 pm

MuseumLab will be open from Noon – 5:00 pm and included with museum admission.

Tune in to SLB Radio’s annual teen-hosted live talk show Streaming Justice about issues of civil rights and social justice on SLB Radio and Youth Express
3:00 – 6:00 pm, repeating until midnight

Seeking Youth Talk Show Hosts for MLK Day: Students in Grades 6 – 12 are invited to host one-hour segments of Streaming Justice, a Youth Express live radio talk show and webcast focusing on civil rights – past, present and future. This annual program features 100% teen hosts and teen-selected topics, music, conversation, listener phone calls and more, all streaming live at www.youthexpress.org.   • Paint a self portrait of your hopes and dreams 
  • Create artwork to be shared with local community groups and care homes
  • See the collaborative “I Have A Dream” mural designed and created by youth artists from Gwen’s Girls, Youth Places and MuseumLab’s Afterschool Program

1:00 – 5:00 pm

In Makeshop

10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Be inspired by Dr. King’s dream of a more just future to brainstorm ways to redesign a place in your community to be more inclusive; then create a small-scale prototype to show what that would look like.
